  17. NeXT Announces NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 for NeXT Computers
  18.  
  19. REDWOOD CITY, Calif., April 26, 1993 - NeXT Computer, Inc. today announced
  20. NEXTSTEP Release 3.1, an upgrade to Release 3.0, for owners of NeXT
  21. workstations.
  22.  
  23. In a related announcement, NeXT also named Bell Atlantic Business Systems
  24. Services as the official service provider for NeXT workstations and printers
  25. worldwide.  (Please refer to separate release.)

  27. NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 is the newest version of the industry's leading object-
  28. oriented software for developing and deploying client/server applications.  It
  29. provides new features, performance enhancements and bug fixes.  The same
  30. version will run both on existing NeXT 68040 workstations and on computers
  31. powered by Intel 80486 and Pentium microprocessors.

  33. "NeXT is committed to continuing support for our installed base of NeXT
  34. workstation customers," said Brett Bachman, NeXT's director of product
  35. marketing.  "We also want to make sure that customers with mixed installations
  36. of NeXT computers and Intel-based PCs can interoperate seamlessly on a
  37. network."
  38.  
  39. NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 for NeXT 68040 Hardware
  40.  
  41. NEXTSTEP Release 3.1, the newest version of the industry's leading object-
  42. oriented software for client/server application development and deployment,
  43. will be available as separate user and developer products.  The user product,
  44. called NEXTSTEP, includes everything needed to use NEXTSTEP applications,
  45. including electronic mail (the multimedia NeXTmail), built-in NetWare and NFS
  46. networking capabilities, transparent database access and system administration
  47. tools.  NEXTSTEP Developer, the development environment, contains all the
  48. visual application construction tools needed to develop NEXTSTEP applications
  49. including distributed object messaging to facilitate building client/server
  50. applications.
  51.  
  52. Significantly, Release 3.1 supports Multiple-Architecture Binaries. As a
  53. result, the same application compiled under Release 3.1 will run on existing
  54. NeXT 68040 workstations and on PCs powered by Intel 80486 and Pentium
  55. microprocessors.
  56.  
  57. In addition, Multiple-Architecture Binaries enable in-house and commercial
  58. NEXTSTEP developers to create and deploy a single version of an application
  59. for mixed hardware environments from either NeXT or Intel computers.  One copy
  60. of an application dynamically loads the correct binary automatically,
  61. depending on the computer on which it is running.
  62.  
  63. Third-party developers have found that porting existing NEXTSTEP applications
  64. to NEXTSTEP for Intel processors is extremely simple. "NEXTSTEP is the ideal
  65. environment for cross-platform development," said Tom Mallory, vice president,
  66. development for WordPerfect Corporation.  "It took one day to port WordPerfect
  67. from NEXTSTEP on the Motorola 68040 to NEXTSTEP on the Intel486.  No other
  68. development environment is as fast or flexible."
  69.  
  70. Network Interoperability
  71.  
  72. NEXTSTEP users of both NeXT and Intel computers can interoperate transparently
  73. over a network.  For example, a NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 document created using an
  74. Intel PC can be opened by a NeXT workstation user simply by double-clicking on
  75. the document's icon. NEXTSTEP also includes support for transparent access to
  76. NetWare and NFS servers.

  78. Compatibility with DOS and Windows Applications
  79.  
  80. Using technology developed and sold by Insignia Solutions in Mountain View,
  81. Calif., NEXTSTEP offers interoperability and compatibility with Microsoft 
  82. DOS/Windows environments, including file transfer and the ability to run these
  83. environments within NEXTSTEP via PC emulation. NEXTSTEP users will enjoy the
  84. same level of Windows emulation as NT users because Insignia Solutions is
  85. providing the same technology used to emulate Windows under NT. Using SoftPC,
  86. NEXTSTEP users can expect to remain current with the latest versions of DOS
  87. and Windows, as well as enjoying progressive compatibility with earlier
  88. versions of the Microsoft operating systems.

  90. "Our Windows compatibility is way ahead because this is exactly the same
  91. technology that Insignia and Microsoft are working together to provide for
  92. Windows NT," said Margaret Chan, manager of NEXTSTEP product marketing at
  93. NeXT.  "We want to leverage these applications in the NEXTSTEP environment. 
  94. Our added value is to integrate mission-critical custom applications on the
  95. desktop with these software applications."

  97. As a service to its customers, NeXT has arranged with Insignia a special
  98. promotion of SoftPC with Windows for owners of NEXTSTEP for NeXT hardware. 
  99. The promotion reduces the price of SoftPC for Windows, regularly $695, to
  100. $499.  This special promotion runs until May 25, when NEXTSTEP Release 3.1
  101. begins shipping.  Interested customers should contact Insignia directly.

  103. Additional Enhancements to Release 3.1
  104.  
  105. NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 has been performance tuned, yielding performance
  106. enhancements of 10 to 15 percent compared to Release 3.0.  It contains bug
  107. fixes and other quality improvements.  The new release also provides enhanced
  108. support for the C++ object-oriented programming language.
  109.  
  110. Release 3.1 is compliant with POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface), a
  111. standard that is mandated in most computer procurements by the federal
  112. government.  GOSIP support, another government-mandated standard, will be
  113. available as an add-on product.
  114.  
  115. AppleTalk client support and AppleShare server support in NEXTSTEP Release 3.1
  116. will be offered through a third-party specialist, Information Presentation
  117. Technologies, Inc. (IPT), of San Luis Obispo, Calif.  IPT is the leader in
  118. cross-platform connectivity between UNIX and Macintosh platforms, and is the
  119. only provider of peer-to-peer UNIX-to-AppleTalk solutions.

  121. Upgrade Price and Availability
  122.  
  123. NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 for NeXT 68040 workstations will be available beginning
  124. at the 1993 NeXTWORLD Expo, being held May 25 through 27 in San Francisco. 
  125. Registered owners of Release 3.0 can purchase an upgrade to the user
  126. environment of Release 3.1 for $75 per individual machine, or $50 per machine
  127. for a Right-to-Use License.  Users of earlier releases of NEXTSTEP can upgrade
  128. to Release 3.1 for $495.

  130. NEXTSTEP Developer will also be available at NeXTWORLD Expo in May, for
  131. $1,995.  Upgrades to this new developer environment on NeXT workstations will
  132. cost $99 for owners of NEXTSTEP Release 3.0, and $495 for owners of Release
  133. 1.X or 2.X.

  137. NeXT has signed an agreement with Bell Atlantic Business Systems Services
  138. under which Bell Atlantic will be the official service provider for NeXT
  139. workstations and printers in the U.S.  Beginning May 15, Bell Atlantic will
  140. assume responsibility for servicing NeXT hardware under warranty, as well as
  141. offering post-warranty support services.  Bell Atlantic Business Systems
  142. Services, headquartered in Frazer, Penn., is well suited to service NeXT
